Denny Hamlin missed Sunday’;s NASCAR race at Fontana due to a sinus infection. Hamlin was ruled out of his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota about 30 minutes ahead of the green flag at the track in which he crashed on the last lap of final year’;s race.
“So disappointed that I can not compete nowadays,” Hamlin mentioned in a post on his Twitter account. “Sorry to all my followers. Thought we had a car that could win nowadays.”
Sam Hornish Jr. was the late substitute in the No. 11 car for Hamlin, who had hoped for redemption at Fontana soon after leaving becoming airlifted away from the track with a broken vertebra last 12 months.
“We dislike it for him,” staff president J.D. Gibbs said. “He’;s been so excellent for us, JGR, in excess of the years, but we’;re just praying he has a fast recovery.”
Gibbs said Hamlin worried his sinus infection would affect his vision in the course of the race. Hamlin was headed to a nearby hospital for a scan on the guidance of a doctor who made a decision he was not match to drive.
“The hard portion is, I think he could even now drive, but he was concerned about it,” Gibbs stated. “He just desired to make certain it was taken care of, and when he brought it up, the medical doctor said, ‘Hey you’;ve got to take care of this proper away.'”
Gibbs stated the group hopes Hamlin will be able to return house Monday.
Hornish is Hamlin’;s JGR teammate on the Nationwide side. Hornish and Hamlin are the 2 approximately 6 feet tall, so few adjustments had to be made for the seat or pedals in Hamlin’;s vehicle.
Hornish was already at Fontana due to the fact Matt Kenseth’;s wife was due to have their next little one.
Hamlin’;s scratch is a enormous disappointment at Fontana for the second straight yr.
Hamlin and Logano, his former teammate and unfriendly rival, had been racing for the lead down the backstretch on the final lap last year when they collided, sending Hamlin challenging into the within wall. Hamlin received out of his auto and collapsed onto the asphalt, and was ultimately airlifted to the hospital due to traffic.
Hamlin missed most of 5 races with a broken vertebra, and the damage left him in back soreness for months. Right after an offseason recovery from his back woes, he had hoped to get back to complete strength along with his staff this season.
Hamlin was 6th in the factors standings following 4 races.
