As the Ford Mustang turns 50, we look back at pony vehicle background
The 1967 model yr noticed the introduction of a redesigned Ford Mustang that was somewhat greater and heavier than the initial pony autos. Bloat, it appears, has been around permanently.
But it wasn’;t all negative: ’;67 ‘Stangs received these crisp, fastback lines immortalized in “Bullitt” and yes, the remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds.”
Plus, the Mustang’;s elevated size meant you could wedge a big-block motor beneath the hood, and that is precisely what Shelby American did with the GT500. Even though it looked like the 289-cubic inch V8-powered GT350, it packed 428 cubic inches breathing via a pair of 4-throat carburetors and a Shelby consumption manifold. One particular point the these overall performance-oriented pony cars did not get, even so, was the Mustang name — technically, they had been just Shelby GTs from 1966 onward.
Competitors Press & Autoweek covered Shelby American’;s modifications to the automobiles in the Nov. twelve, 1966 problem. Also note the post “GM counters Ford, claims 2 electric vehicles currently running” next to the Shelby quick. It looks that the race to construct high-efficiency autos has constantly run parallel to the quest to develop planet-class overall performance machines. And as in 1967, batteries are even now a key obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric autos. Back then, batteries reportedly expense $ sixteen,000 per motor vehicle — in 1967 dollars! Do the math — you could’;ve bought 4 GT350s for that value.
Like what you are reading through? As a gorgeously illustrated ad for the high-overall performance pair on page 8 of the same problem proclaimed, “a single is waiting at your Shelby dealer’;s [sic] now.” Locate the report and the ad below.
