LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC – Kyle Busch believes that he is a really in a very strong early-season place, regardless of being just 14th in the overall Sprint Cup standings.
By some specifications, Kyle Busch had a slow commence to the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. The outspoken Joe Gibbs Racing driver completed 19th in the season-opening Daytona 500 and then managed a ninth-location finish the following weekend in Phoenix.
Still, ahead of the upcoming Las Vegas race, Busch is not feeling any sense of urgency to commence racking up wins, at least not nevertheless.
“I don’t consider there’s a sense of urgency at all, to be sincere with you, in my book,” explained Busch. “I considered of it the 2 ways. If I get a win or numerous wins or what ever, excellent, that is cool. If I really don’;t get any wins, as lengthy as I’m in the best-sixteen in factors and there aren’t 16 guys that have wins, then I’m fine, proper? The time or the urgency to get those wins is going to be in the Chase in buy to lock yourself in the subsequent [round]. I believe — what’s the 1st round – Chicago, Loudon and then Dover, so those 3 – that’s when you start off hunting wins really difficult and striving to do no matter what you can to get checkered flags in the Chase.”
Busch is similarly undeterred when it comes possessing championship hopes right after a slow begin underneath the new point structure.
“I consider as long as you can get a win, I really don’;t consider it truly issues as much any longer,” stated Busch. “If you don’t get a win, then you nonetheless want to have a robust start since there nevertheless are going to be guys who make the Chase without having wins. For instance, my start is not terrible. I’m 14th in points or something like that, so I’m kind of presently in if you appear at it that way. Kurt [Busch], for instance, has had a horrible start and if he wins right here this weekend, then all he has to do is get himself top-30 in factors and he’s in. It adjustments almost everything: the way the total year and everybody’s technique is and what all it’s going to boil down to. You in no way know what you will see next weekend at Bristol. You could have guys racing every other tough for the win and move the other out of the way just to get that win and lock themselves in.”
This kind of mentality is not limited only to Busch. In reality, other Sprint Cup drivers this kind of as Jimmie Johnson have shared comparable sentiments when it comes to the new factors structure.
“I undoubtedly agree [with Kyle Busch],” explained Johnson. “The fact that points even now count for the initial minimize to make the Chase, primarily you want to be 16th in factors, which is much more generous than what we have noticed in preceding many years. I do agree with Kyle’s mindset. I consider that winning late in the season is quite crucial. I guess you nonetheless can transfer all the way through by having a fantastic factors situation, which I’m in favor of. I think our series still requirements to have that element of consistency and be rewarded for it. But winning gets most crucial from Chicago on.”
Whilst wins could become far more crucial later on in the season, both Busch and Johnson will be hunting for their first victory of 2014 when the Sprint Cup heads to Las Vegas for the Kobalt 400 on Sunday, March 9.
