Kentucky House panel OKs tighter car insurance laws

— A Kentucky Residence panel says when it comes to letting your vehicle insurance coverage lapse, 1 strike and you are out.

Presently, Kentucky law permits a driver’;s insurance to lapse 3 times before the automobile registration is revoked.

But beneath a bill passed Wednesday, that variety would drop to 1 time.

The bill’;s sponsor is Democratic Rep. Keith Hall of Phelps. Hall says drivers would nevertheless have 60 days from the time insurance coverage lapses to restore coverage.

Republican Rep. David Floyd of Bardstown asked for an amendment to let some members of the military to be exempt from the penalties.

The bill cleared the Home Transportation Committee on Tuesday with a unanimous vote. It now moves to the total Home for consideration.

The legislation is Residence Bill 295.
