The 4-cylinder engines for the Porsche Cayman and Boxster will do far more than increase every single car’s fuel economy: the lower fat that comes from reducing cylinder count by a third must allow each autos to handle and brake more efficiently.

Porsche, confirming in a German media report that each its small sports autos will be accessible for the initial time with flat-4 boxer engines, follows the industry’s trend in minimizing engine size. It is also a return to the German company’s roots.

Porsche offered a flat-4 engine — which indicates the pistons are horizontally opposed, instead of inline or in a V — from 1938 to the mid 1970s. Porsche also supplied inline 4-cylinder engines into the 1990s.

The engine getting readied for the Boxster and Cayman will be derivatives of Porsche’;s classic 6-cylinder engines and be portion of a modular engine approach. That means Porsche will use common manufacturing lines, and the 4- and 6-cylinder engines will share numerous components. That aids reduce expense and complexity.

“We will carry on with the downsizing approach and produce a new 4-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the following-generation Boxster and Cayman,” explained Porsche CEO Matthias Muller, in an interview with Germany’;s Car Motor und Sport magazine. “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2,” he added.

When queried on the output of the new 4-cylinder boxer engine, Muller recommended it would generate “up to 395 horsepower.”

Porsche has not explained which markets would get the 4-cylinder versions of the Cayman and Boxster. But final month in Leipzig, Germany, at the press introduction of the Macan compact SUV, Muller stated that motor vehicle would get a 4-cylinder engine for the Chinese market place to meet legal specifications.

Less expensive 4-cylinder versions might also make sense for North America, where the least costly Porsche model, the Macan S, fees $ 50,895 including shipping.

Today’;s 3.4-liter 6-cylinder powered Boxster produces up to 325 hp and the Cayman build up to 335 hp in the new GTS assortment-topping models exposed this week.
