Retired IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti will speed the discipline
Chevrolet has taken the wraps off the speed vehicle for the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500: It’;ll be the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Veteran race auto driver Dario Franchitti will be piloting the Camaro Z/28 around the track on race day, May possibly 25.
2014 will mark the eighth time that a Camaro has been selected as the official tempo auto for the race, with 1967 becoming the 1st time that a Camaro has lead the pack all around the course. And this year’;s Indianapolis 500 will be the 25th time that a Chevrolet has served as a speed automobile. Recall that a 2014 Corvette Stingray did the task last year.
“Dario is a real champion who has earned the respect of rivals and race followers alike,” mentioned Jim Campbell, vice president of overall performance autos and motorsports at Chevrolet. “It will be very particular to have Dario lead the area to the green flag in the Camaro Z/28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”
Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 3 times–in 2007, 2010, and 2012–and is the third driver ever to win 3 consecutive IndyCar titles out of a complete of 4 title job wins. Franchitti was thrilled to be chosen to drive the speed vehicle as he moves on to a diverse stage of his profession in driver growth with Chip Ganassi Racing following retiring in 2013.
“It is a great honor for me to be asked to drive the Speed Vehicle for the Indianapolis 500,” Franchitti mentioned. “As a historian of motorsport and as a 3-time winner of this wonderful race, I will value every single minute of getting to tempo the field in the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. Even though I will not be competing in the Best Spectacle in Racing, this will be as close as one person can get to the action. I cannot wait right up until May in Indianapolis.”
As for the Camaro Z/28 itself, the model is fresh from posting a scorching time at the Nürburgring with a 7:37 lap, beating such past masters as the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.
Underneath the hood of the Z/28 is a 6.-liter V8 creating 505 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque, numbers that would have, at one stage in time, actually permitted it to beat the actual race autos at the Speedway with the optional air conditioning blowing and some tunes on. The tempo vehicle will be wearing 19-inch forger aluminum wheels shod in Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires, along with an aerodynamic body kit. Last but not least, there is the Indianapolis 500 Official Speed Auto livery, which looks wonderful against the mean black backdrop of the car’;s exterior paint above black wheels.
