Because he took over Honeywell 12 years in the past, David Cote has appeared on several leading business leader lists. His $ forty billion revenue, $ 70 billion market place cap manufacturing conglomerate has well outpaced the S&P 500 over his tenure as Chairman and CEO.
So it is worth listening to Cote’s leadership advice, as he espoused on Thursday at the Forbes Reinventing America Summit.
Cote says leadership is not really what most people say it is. The most apparent part — the capacity to mobilize, be charismatic — is truly only 5% of getting a CEO. “It’s the most visible, and the a single we tend to measure folks on. But more essential: can you select the correct route? You would have been better off getting much less charismatic, much less intriguing, and pick a much better course for your business.”
After you’ve picked the proper route, Cote believes moving everybody in the exact same direction, one stage at a time, is equally important. He has to herd 130,000 workers in a single route.
2 other pieces of the puzzle: “Can you get benefits in a sustainable way? Most of my executives can. But are you self-conscious and are you a learner? That’s considerably tougher,” says Cote.
In addition, Cote says that most company leaders really don’;t strategy meetings with the proper frame of mind. “Your work is to be right at the finish of the meeting, not the beginning,” says Cote. “There’s no way you’re ever going to know every little thing. There need to be a mosaic picture of the selection you need to have to make. If individuals really do not know the place you are coming from, you finish up with a considerably richer discussion, much better selection.”
