2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Switches to 8-Pace Automatic Transmission

Chevrolet’;s range-topping 625-horsepower 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 won’;t be the only Corvette with an 8-speed automatic transmission for 2015. Entry-level Stingray designs ditch 2014’;s 6-speed automatic transmission in favor of the Z06-derived 8-speed that will improve fuel efficiency an estimated 5 % while strengthening efficiency.

Recent Corvette Stingrays with the optional 6-speed automatic are rated at sixteen/28/20 mpg city/highway/mixed while the standard 7-pace manual is 17/29/21 mpg. Official EPA check final results for the 8-pace are at present pending.

The new 8-velocity is primarily based on the Z06’;s automated transmission and uses exclusive internal parts tailored to the Stingray’;s 455-hp or 460-hp V-7 Incorporating 2 extra gears should support preserve the Stingray’;s engine in its peak energy assortment with less drop-off in engine speed in between gear changes. Going from 6 to 8 gears did not increase the fat or size of the transmission, and the new transmission is lighter than the 6-pace thanks to aluminum and magnesium building, shedding 8 lbs.

Like the 6-pace, however, the new 8-speed is a conventional automated transmission and not the dual-clutch assortment known for lightning-fast shifts in the Porsche 911 and BMW M3.

“It was made to boost the Stingray’;s driving expertise, with efficiency on par with dual-clutch types, but without having sacrificing refinement,” explained Bill Goodrich, assistant chief engineer for 8-pace automatic transmissions, in a statement.

Upshifts at broad-open throttle are 8/100ths of a 2nd faster than the Porsche 911’;s 6-velocity dual-clutch automated, Chevrolet says. Dual-clutch transmissions have a tendency for drivability quirks, such as awkward acceleration from a quit and erratic downshifting patterns, although in our expertise the 911’;s incredibly refined dual-clutch 6-speed automated is not a single of those.

Corvette and Camaro communications representative Monte Doran mentioned in an e-mail that Chevrolet expects the 2015 Stingray to arrive in dealerships this September with a modest pricing enhance for the 8-velocity automated transmission — no official pricing has been announced.
